Bangladesh, despite its relatively small area, is the world’s 7th largest potato producer, ahead of Poland, France and the Netherlands. Potatoes are also a very important staple food, and mildew wreaks havoc there every year.

CARAH collaborates with Professor Rashidul Islam, representative of Bangladesh within the Asiablight network. A seminar was organized with the SAARC, South Asia Association for Regional Cooperation, whose center for agricultural development would be very interested in examining the advisability of launching a warning system against mildew integrating biofungicides (studied by Prof. Islam) in South Asia.

In recent years Prof. R. Islam has developed biofungicides extracted from, among others, Pseudomonas spp and Bacillus spp and active against downy mildew and has tested them in trial fields with some success, which has resulted in a scientific publication associated with CARAH (Potential of formulated bioagents from Lab to field: a sustainable alternative of minimizing the use of chemical fungicide in controlling potato late blight. Sustainability, 2022). The use of a warning system could undoubtedly significantly improve the effectiveness of the use of these biofungicides.
